Is Verbena Bonariensis the Best Perennial for Height?

Probably!

Verbena bonariensis, commonly known as tall verbena, is an excellent addition to any garden. I have added some to my garden this year! Here’s why you should add it to your garden.

Graceful and Attractive Appearance - Verbena bonariensis is a visually stunning plant with its tall, slender stems and clusters of small purple flowers. Its airy, delicate appearance adds a touch of elegance to the garden.

Long Blooming Period - This perennial plant has an extended blooming season, typically from mid-summer through fall. Its profusion of purple flowers attracts pollinators like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, contributing to the garden's biodiversity.

Vertical Interest -  With its height ranging from 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters), Verbena bonariensis provides vertical interest in the garden, creating a sense of depth and layers.

Versatility in Planting -  The plant's airy structure allows it to fit well with various garden designs. It pairs beautifully with other perennials, grasses, and annuals, adding a touch of charm to mixed borders or cottage style gardens.

Low Maintenance -  Verbena bonariensis is relatively easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. It thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, tolerates dry conditions, and requires little to no pruning.

Self-Seeding - The plant has a tendency to self-seed, which means it can naturalise in the garden and create new plants in subsequent years, adding to its overall longevity and charm.

Attracts Beneficial Insects - The nectar-rich flowers of Verbena bonariensis attract beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, enhancing pollination in the garden and supporting the local ecosystem.

Cut Flower Potential - The tall, slender stems of Verbena bonariensis make it an ideal cut flower.

Drought Tolerance - Its ability to tolerate dry conditions and still produce abundant blooms makes Verbena bonariensis an asset, particularly in regions with hot summers or water restrictions.

The addition of Verbena bonariensis in your garden not only elevates its aesthetic appeal but also supports pollinators, encourages biodiversity, and adds a sense of grace and enchantment to your outdoor space. Whether as a focal point or a supporting element, this beautiful perennial is sure to be a delightful addition to any garden.

I am so pleased with it in my garden and will definitely be looking to grow more plant babies from plants. 💚
